  • Matt Sherman

    Director of Stanford Rugby

    Matt joins Stanford Rugby for his third season in 2012/13. In his first year, he was the Men’s Head Coach at Stanford, with the team finishing first in the Conference, but losing in the quarter-finals nationally to finish 5th in the nation. He is now in his second year as the Director of Rugby, overseeing both the Men’s and Women’s program, and as both teams' head coach. Prior to joining Stanford he was the head coach a San Diego State in 2009/10, and prior to that he was an assistant coach at San Diego State and Cal before that. Matt attended Cal (‘03) where he won four national championships and was a three time All-American rugby player as a Fly-half.  He went on to play for the USA National Team and played in the 2003 Rugby World Cup, as well as at Oxford University where he earned a graduate degree. Over the past four years, he has served as an assistant coach with the USA National Team, including coaching the USA backs in the 2011 Rugby World Cup, and oversaw USA Rugby’s Junior National Teams as the Age Grade Director. During the summer of 2012, Matt also served as the head coach to the Men's Collegiate All-American team. Matt is a Bay Area native, raised in Piedmont, California.

  • Zack Vaughn, MD

    Head Team Physician Stanford Men's & Women's Rugby

    Dr. Vaughn became the team physician for Stanford Rugby in 2010. He is originally from San Jose, California and was previously a high-level soccer player competing with the USA National Soccer Team and was captain of the University of San Francisco Men’s Soccer Team. He received his medical degree from St. Louis University and completed both his orthopedic surgery training and a fellowship in sports medicine at Stanford University. He is a specialist of sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery and a full-time faculty member of the Stanford University department of Orthopedic surgery and has been a team physician for several local teams including Stanford University, and the San Francisco 49ers.

  • Rachel Blakeman (RTT)

    Medical Staff Stanford Men's & Women's Rugby

    Rachel joined Stanford Rugby in 2005 as the Athletic Trainer for both the Men's and Women's teams. In her first year, she assisted the women's team to the 2006 National Championship win over Penn State and has since been an invaluable staff member of Stanford Rugby. She has previously worked at Chula Vista Olympic Training Center as medical staff, USA Rugby, the Independent Women's Football League, and the Pacific Coast Rugby Football Union. RTT is a graduate of San Jose State University with a B.A. in Athletic Training and Psychology ('97) and a M.A. in Kinesiology. She works hard to keep players fit and on the field as much as possible.
