• Matt Sherman

    Director of Rugby – Head Coach

    Started in 2011 (5th Year)           

    Matt joined Stanford Rugby in the 2011 season as the head coach of the Stanford Men, and became the Director of Rugby and head coach of the Men and Women from 2012 on. In his four years with the Men’s program the team has twice won their conference and reached the quarterfinals nationally. Prior to joining Stanford, Matt was at San Diego State University both as the head coach (2010) and assistant coach (2009) where the Aztecs finished 5th and 3rd in the country respectively. From 2007-2008, Matt was an assistant coach at Cal, helping the team to two National Championships. As a collegiate player at Cal, Matt won four national championships and was a three time All-American fly-half. He went on to play for the USA National Team, played in the 2003 Rugby World Cup, and finished playing for Oxford University, where he earned a masters degree. From 2009-2011 he served as the backs coach with the USA National Team through the 2011 Rugby World Cup, and also oversaw USA Rugby’s Junior National Teams as the Age Grade Director from 2008-2011. On top of his Stanford duties, Matt currently coaches USA Rugby’s Men’s Collegiate All-American Coach (a position he took on in 2012), is coaching director of Nike Rugby Camps, and head coach of the Olympic Club 7’s Program.

  • Jeff Christensen

    Assistant Coach- Forwards

    Started in 2013 (3rd Year)

    Jeff began playing rugby with the Silicon Valley Rugby Club in High School before attending San Diego State University. He captained the Aztecs for three years, and was a Southern California All-Star and league MVP before graduating and playing for OMBAC in San Diego and Back Bay in LA. As a coach, Jeff assisted at San Diego State for two years, and also worked with the forwards of the Southern California All-Stars. Jeff grew up in Bay Area, attending St. Francis High School. He now lives in the South Bay and works for Boston Scientific, specializing in chronic back pain treatments.

  • Jake Lowenheim

    Assistant Coach

    Jake started playing rugby after a multi-sport background, competing with the Stanford GSB team, as well as the San Jose Seahawks. As a coach, before joining Stanford rugby he’d worked with teams in swimming, basketball, and football. Jake graduated from the University of Maryland, and is a Maryland native. He now resides in Palo Alto, and has worked primarily in Biology related industries, currently as VP of sales for Sanguine Biosciences.

  • Travis Benson

    Assistant Coach

    Started in 2014 (2nd Year)

    Travis began playing rugby in high school with the Peninsula Green RFC and Seahawks Youth Rugby . He quickly advanced in the game and went on to play for the USA National U19 team as a scrumhalf in the 2007 Junior World Cup in Belfast. He went on to play at Cal, the San Francisco Golden Gate Rugby Club, and in New Zealand for the Kahukura Rugby Club and New Zealand Sports Academy. Travis has already cut his teeth coaching, working with Seahawks Youth Rugby, and Peninsula Green. He’s also a certified referee. Travis hales from San Carols, Ca., and currently resides in Palo Alto, working for Emergency University.

  • Rob Polk

    Strength and Conditioning Coach- On Field

    Started in 2013 (3rd Year)

    Before joining the Stanford Rugby Staff, Rob played both football and rugby at Stanford before graduating in 2011. As a player on the team, Rob helped lead the Cardinal to a 5th place finish nationally and also represented the Pacific Coast Grizzlies. Since graduating, Rob continues to play 7’s for the Olympic Club, and helped the Olympic Club reach the 7’s National Championship in 2012. In his first year coaching at Stanford, Rob helped coach on the field, as well as directing the strength and conditioning program, including both on field and weight room workouts. Rob now hopes to further improve and develop the program, developing the overall strength, fitness levels, and overall athleticism of the program.

  • Dr. Zack Vaughn MD

    Head Team Physician

    Started in 2010 (6th Year)

    Originally from San Jose, California, Dr. Vaughn was previously a high-level soccer player competing with the USA National Soccer Team and was captain of the University of San Francisco Men’s Soccer Team. He received his medical degree from St. Louis University and completed both his orthopedic surgery training and a fellowship in sports medicine at Stanford University. He is a specialist of sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery and a full-time faculty member of the Stanford University department of Orthopedic surgery and has been a team physician for several local teams including Stanford University, and the San Francisco 49ers. He now also works with the Golden State Warriors.
